Royal Treasure Museum Lisbon (Tesouro Real)

The Royal Treasure Museum (Tesouro Real) holds the crown jewels of the Portuguese royal house, more than 1,000 pieces, inside a restored wing of the National Palace of Ajuda. It opened in 2022. This page covers its tickets and prices, the seasonal opening hours, the security check, how the museum differs from the palace next door, and how the Lisboa Card makes entry free. Adult entry costs €11 ($12.27) and the museum opens every day of the year except 25 December and 1 January, so it is a Monday option in a city where most national museums close that day, and a Wednesday option when the Ajuda palace next door is shut. For other days out, see the museums in Lisbon guide and its routes by area.

Opening Hours and Closed Days

Hours switch with the seasons on 1 October and 1 May, and the museum closes on only two days a year.

Seasonal Hours and Last Admission

From 1 October to 30 April the museum opens daily 10:00-18:00. From 1 May to 30 September it stays open an hour longer, daily 10:00-19:00. Last admission is 60 minutes before closing.

The museum closes on just two days a year, 25 December and 1 January. It is open on Mondays and Wednesdays, which sets it apart from much of the city. Monday is the main closing day in Lisbon, and the National Palace of Ajuda in the same building closes every Wednesday. A Wednesday visit therefore means the treasure only. For a Monday plan, pair the Tesouro Real with the Gulbenkian Museum, or MAAT.

What You Will See

Eleven exhibition areas over 3 floors trace the Portuguese crown's treasure from the Braganza era, 1640 to 1910.

Eleven Sections of the Royal Collection

The museum displays more than 1,000 objects in 11 sections. Highlights include Brazilian gold and diamonds, the orders of knighthood, the royal crown and sceptres, and two ceremonial mantles. A complete Germain silver service, commissioned after the 1755 earthquake, fills its own display, and two Golden Roses show papal honours to the Portuguese crown.

A section of diplomatic gifts rounds out the visit.

Royal Treasure Museum and Ajuda Palace

Two attractions share one hill, but they run on different tickets, different operators and different closed days.

Two Tickets, No Combined Ticket

The Royal Treasure Museum and the Ajuda National Palace have separate operators, and neither official site sells a combined ticket. Each links only to the other's website. Adult entry is €11 ($12.27) for the treasure and €15 ($16.73) for the palace, so seeing both costs €26 ($28.99) for an adult.

The closed days differ. The treasure is open every day except 25 December and 1 January. The palace opens Thursday to Tuesday 10:00-18:00 with last entry at 17:15, and it closes every Wednesday plus 1 January, Easter Sunday, 1 May, 13 June and 25 December. Plan Wednesday for the treasure alone, and keep Thursday to Tuesday for a full day of both. Children under 13 need no ticket for the palace, where the average visit takes 1h45.

Inside the Palace

The Ajuda National Palace shows 19th-century royal rooms with views over the Tagus, and its own entry ticket costs €15 ($16.73). Reductions of 50% apply for visitors 65+, ages 13-24 and families of one adult plus one minor. Portugal residents get 52 free days a year under the Acesso 52 scheme. Flash photography, selfie sticks and tripods are not allowed inside the palace rooms.

If you want a ticket that covers both buildings, the Lisboa Card is the simplest route, since it includes free admission to the treasure and the palace on its list. Otherwise buy the two entry tickets separately, the treasure ticket and the palace ticket, and budget a full day on the hill for the pair.

  • Palace full ticket €15 ($16.73), 50% off 65+, 13-24 and families
  • Under-13 free at the palace
  • Palace visit averages 1h45
  • No flash, selfie sticks or tripods in the palace

Getting There

The museum sits on Calçada da Ajuda and is reached by Carris bus or tram 18.

Address and Transport

The address is Calçada da Ajuda, 1349-021 Lisboa. Carris buses 729, 760, 732, 742 and 771 serve the stop, and tram 18 also serves it. No metro station is listed for the site, so plan on bus or tram for the last stretch.

The nearest other museums are in Belém: the National Coach Museum and Museu de Marinha. With a Lisboa Card you ride the city's public transport unlimited while it is valid, which covers the tram and bus ride up the hill.

Lisboa Card and Discounts

Entry is free with the Lisboa Card at both the treasure and the palace.

Free Entry on the Card

The Lisboa Card lists free admission to the Tesouro Real and to the Palácio Nacional da Ajuda, so card holders walk into both without buying a ticket. Card prices start at €31 ($34.57) for 24 hours, €51 ($56.87) for 48 hours and €62 ($69.13) for 72 hours, and the pass includes unlimited public transport. A treasure and palace day without the card costs €26 ($28.99) per adult, less than the 24-hour card, so the card makes sense when you add more paid museums. See Lisboa Card for Museums for the full list of what is free and what only gets a discount, and Free Museums in Lisbon for days that cost nothing without a pass.

Without the card, reduced tickets cost €7.50 ($8.36) for ages 7-24 and for visitors 65 and over, and €5.50 ($6.13) with a disability over 60%. Children up to 6 enter free. The family ticket covers 2 adults plus 2 young people for €35 ($39.03).

Is It Worth It?

For €11 ($12.27), the Tesouro Real suits anyone drawn to gold, gems and royal ceremony, and its daily opening covers Mondays and Wednesdays.

Who It Suits and How Long to Allow

The museum has 11 sections over 3 floors, and families benefit from the €7.50 ($8.36) youth rate and free under-7s. Security adds time at the door, so arrive well before last admission at 60 minutes before closing.

If interior design and 19th-century royal life interest you more than jewels, pick the palace instead, or do the palace first and the treasure after, since both sit in the same building. The palace averages 1h45 and costs €15 ($16.73). Neither ticket includes the other, and there is no combined ticket, so decide how much of the hill your day allows. On Wednesdays the choice is made for you, since only the treasure opens. For another stop nearby, Museu de Marinha and the National Coach Museum are in Belém. The National Museum of Ancient Art (MNAA) and the National Tile Museum are closed for works, so check their pages before planning around them.

  • 11 sections over 3 floors at the treasure
  • Palace visit averages 1h45
  • Both together: a full day on the Ajuda hill
  • Wednesday: treasure only, palace closed

Tips for Visiting

Do

  • Do plan a Monday or Wednesday visit if your trip is short, because the Tesouro Real opens daily while most national museums close on Mondays and the palace closes on Wednesdays.
  • Do arrive before last admission, 60 minutes before closing, so the security check does not cut into your visit.
  • Do use the lockers on the shop side for larger bags, because the airport-style security check makes big bags a slow start.
  • Do buy the €35 ($39.03) family ticket if you are 2 adults with 2 young people aged 7-24, since it is the museum's rate for that group.
  • Do check the Lisboa Card if you plan several museums, because free entry to both the treasure and the palace is on its list.

Don't

  • Don't turn up on 25 December or 1 January, because those are the museum's only closed days of the year.
  • Don't buy the palace ticket for a Wednesday, because the palace closes every Wednesday and the treasure is the only part open.
  • Don't treat the €11 ($12.27) and €15 ($16.73) tickets as one product, because the two buildings have separate operators and no combined ticket exists.
  • Don't bring flash, selfie sticks or tripods into the palace, because the palace forbids them in its rooms.
